"I am autistic and this was the first dental treatment where I did not experience ableism. I was treated with enormous respect, I wasn't asked any awkward questions about my autism and a lot of emphasis was placed on creating an environment where I would feel comfortable. At the same time, I was not infantilised in any way. The doctor has a very kind, calm manner and explained every step to me in detail, taking a lot of time for me and also talking to me about my fears. She showed and explained all the devices to me beforehand and kept me distracted during the treatment. My noise-cancelling headphones (also during the treatment) were very welcome and my stimming was very much appreciated. I was also allowed to hold the hand of another incredibly friendly dental assistant during an injection to reassure me. I was consistently addressed by my real name and pronouns. The doctor immediately switched to very direct communication, as indirect communication causes me problems. When I brought my psychiatric certificate out of habit, I was told that they didn't need a certificate at all and that it was enough if I wanted to verbally share that I am autistic. I'm sure this is enormously helpful, even for neurodivergent people who are not officially diagnosed. The treatment was also really great from a professional point of view. Based on my experience, I can highly recommend this practice."
